How to Treat Sore Gums

Posted on 1/11/2021 by Karl Olson
How to Treat Sore GumsSore or aching gums are a pretty common problem among adults. If you experience pain when brushing your teeth or if your gums start to bleed, you are probably suffering from sore gums. Sometimes, the condition also comes with persistently aching gums that can be quite uncomfortable. Though sore gums are easy to treat, they may be an early sign of gum disease, which is why you should not ignore them.

Causes of Sore Gums

There are many reasons why you may be suffering from sore gums. Some are related to poor oral health, health conditions, continuous trauma to the gums, bacterial infections, etc.

•  Brushing too hard – the constant trauma exerted by excessive force can be a cause for sore gums.
•  Improper flossing – Flossing is essential for the maintenance of oral and dental health. However, it can be dangerous as it can damage the gums if used improperly.
•  Gum disease – If your gums are sore, inflamed, and bleeding, you are likely suffering from gum disease.
•  Other Health Conditions – Diseases such as leukemia, blood disorders, pregnancy, vitamin K deficiencies, etc., can all be the reason for sore gums.
•  Diet, stress, excessive tobacco use, and poor oral hygiene can cause sore gums.

Treatment for Sore Gums

The main symptoms of sore gums are increased sensitivity in the gums and the teeth and gums. For most people, these symptoms are very common, which is why they often ignore them. However, they may be an indication of the onset of gum disease. Thus, you should visit your dentist immediately to seek professional help.

You can also improve oral healthcare practices to reduce gum sensitivity and manage symptoms.

•  Use a soft bristled toothbrush to avoid causing trauma to the gums.
•  Learn how to floss properly.
•  Use an Antibacterial toothpaste and mouthwash to get rid of bacteria in the mouth, which may be a cause of sore gums.
•  Visit your dentist at least twice a year to catch sore gums early on and treat them properly.
