Can Bad Oral Health Cause Dry Mouth?
Posted on 7/23/2020 by Karl Olson
Can Bad Oral Health Cause Dry Mouth?Dry mouth, or xerostomia, refers to an oral condition in which the mouth stays for long periods without adequate levels of moisture due to a shortfall in saliva production. Your mouth needs to remain moist at all times for many reasons. For one, moisture is necessary when breaking down and swallowing food. And because it helps neutralize acids in the mouth that fuel bacterial growth and also washes bacteria off your mouth, the presence of saliva is constantly needed in your mouth to fight tooth infection, gum disease, and other oral problems.

When there's a shortfall in saliva supply, you'll experience discomfort, such as a sticky, dry feeling in your mouth or throat. It becomes challenging to chew, swallow, or speak properly. Dry mouth can also give rise to burning sensations in the mouth, cracked lips, gum irritation, mouth sores, bad breath, and ultimately tooth decay.

Dry mouth can manifest as a symptom of a more serious underlining health issue, or it can give rise to complex health problems on its own. Dry mouth can be caused by bacterial infections and can also give rise to them.

As such, oral hygiene, which helps fight bacterial infections, can play a huge part in your fight against dry mouth. Other common causes of dry mouth include drug reactions, dehydration, nerve problems, stuffy nose that causes you to breathe through your mouth, hormonal changes from pregnancies or menopause, and autoimmune diseases like Sjogren's syndrome.

How Best to Prevent and Treat Dry Mouth

Good oral hygiene helps stimulate the gums and dislodge bacteria in the mouth, creating an enabling environment for saliva flow. You can also prevent the discomforts of dry mouth by sipping water regularly, avoiding caffeinated or alcoholic drinks, chewing sugarless gums to stimulate your gums, reducing your intake of foods that are sugary, spicy, salty, or acidic.

But the best way out of dry mouth is by undergoing proper diagnosis at our offices, after which we'll place you on a suitable treatment regimen that targets the root cause of the problem. Call our office today to get rid of your dry mouth.
