For example, you may experience tooth pain if you bite into something hard or you use the wrong technique when flossing. Something may get stuck between the teeth that irritates the tooth and gum as well. Also, children may experience tooth pain, which is part of developing. Other reasons for severe oral pain are not so clear-cut and must be assessed and diagnosed by us.
What Conditions Cause Oral Pain that are not Associated with Decay?
You can experience oral pain from a canker sore. This sore appears at the base of the gum and may cause you to feel extreme discomfort. Temporomandibular joint pain (TMJ) may cause severe oral pain too, which results from poor tooth and jaw alignment, dislocation of the jaw, or arthritis. In some cases, the pain may be due to bruxism, which is a severe grinding of the teeth. If you are taking certain medicines, they may cause dry mouth, which can cause mouth soreness and pain. Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is yet another reason you may experience oral pain. BMS symptoms include a burning sensation in the mouth and changes in taste. Thrush, which is a fungal infection, also causes discomfort, and may result from a bacterial imbalance or dry mouth. You will see whitish spots inside the mouth, including the tongue.
